So I've been thinking to when I was little, and I remember this one time were me and another kid were telling each other yo mama jokes. So I'm in the middle of telling a yo mama joke, and all of a sudden this older kid from behind us is like "hey can you stop my mom just died" (even though we weren't talking to him). We stopped though. Were we being insensitive?

He shouldn't be eavesdropping in the first place. Next time tell that kid he needs to lighten up and stop listening to other people's conversations.

You were children. And since you had no way of knowing his mom had just died, you were not being insensitive. Furthermore, the fact that this still bothers you prolly means you're not insensitive.
